I am a professional photographer specializing in weddings for over 30 years. I have used medium format cameras, 35mm cameras, and now digital since the Canon D30 hit the market. I bought this lens a week ago and have found it to be a good choice, though not up to Takina's 12-24 F/4 which I would say is the best lens in this class. The Canon is lighter which makes it comfortable to shoot with a heaver camera like the 50D espically with a battery grip on, which I don't own yet but plan on buying soon. The extra two degrees at the wide end is a big advantage also with this lens, though you lose it at the zoomed range this is not such an issue as I think most people who will buy this lens will have that covered buy another lens if the really need it.

This lens is soft in the corners especially wide open, this is common in a lens of this class and the Takina also does this but not to the degree of this Canon it also handles CA better and the Takina I would say has a much stronger build. Takina is well known for making tank lenses. I would take this lens over the Sigma and Tamron versions (Tamron usually I find to be the best for 3rd party lenses), but in my opinion, the Takina just out performs these lenses and does so with a constant F/4 aperture which is very important to me. Flare control does seem a bit better also with this lens though not by much, it can make a big difference in some shooting scenes.

This is a great lens overall, so don't think I am unhappy with it. If the lens was cheaper I would probably recommend it but it's the same price a Takina's, Sigmas and Tamrons without the benefits so I will be returning it.

It focuses quickly and accurately on my D90 even when I turn off the AF illumination. The colors are natural. I only had one lens for my D90 before getting the 50/1.4. That lens was the 16-85 Nikkor. I like the sharpness of my 16-85 and its versatility, but I leave home a lot without it after getting this lens. I am a hobbyist and this review is for people like me. What I mean by that is that I take pictures for fun and nobody buys my pictures. I mostly shoot landscape, nature, and portraits of family, friends, and relatives. I will refer to 24-70mm as the 70, and the 24-105mm IS as the 105. I first made the mistake of buying the 70, then I returned it with a hefty restocking fee and bought the 105 - I don't have the slightest regret and I could not be happier. I'm taking my time to write this review so that you can spend your hard earned money wisely. Let's analyze the trade-off between the two:
* Both lenses have excellent build and image quality. So these are not differentiating factors.
* The one and only advantage of the 70 is the one smaller f-stop. For me, this means more blur when I shoot portraits, so this is all good.
* The advantage of 105 over the 70 are as follows:
- You get an extra 35mm, which is 50% more zoom. I like this.
- You get a 3-stop IS. For me, this is a great advantage, because I rarely use tripods and IS saves the day. I would choose the 105 over 70 for the IS alone.
- The 105 is 10 ounces lighter and close to half an inch shorter.
The last part is the most important part: that additional 10 ounces make a heavy lens TOO HEAVY, and that extra length makes a big lens TOO BIG. Carrying the 70 on my 50D was a pain. I can assure you, the 70 is just too heavy to walk around and take pictures for fun. The keyword here is "fun". The 70 is a pain, the 105 is fun. The 105 is still heavy, but not too heavy. It's still big, but not too big. After having the 70 for a few weeks, I lost all my joy for shooting. It just made me very uncomfortable (and I'm 6-foot 2). When I replaced it with the 105, it did make a difference. I enjoy taking pictures now, once again. Pros might like the 70 because they need it for their professional work. But if you're shooting just for fun, stay away from the 70. Again, this is from my point of view as a hobbyist, and this is why I gave the 70 one star.

I had been using SanDisk Extreme III (30 MB/s) in my Nikon digital SLR, and while they were reliable and so on, I was never able to get the full high speed frame rate Nikon promises. Instead of the 5-7 frames per second, I was getting more like 2-3.

Switching to the 60MB/s fixed that problem, and now I'm getting the full performance my camera is capable of...at least 5 fps under most conditions.

Interestingly, I also purchased a smaller card capable of 90MB/s, and saw no real difference, so I'm considering the 60MB/s version ideal - nice, since it's much less expensive than the faster cards.

Even though I own a Nikon D5000 DSLR, I still ended up buying the Canon 200DG instead of a bag made by Nikon. I am very happy with this bag, and would recommend it to other DSLR owners. First, let me list good reasons to get this bag:

1. It is huge, at least for my needs as a non-professional. It holds my DSLR with 18-55 mm lens attached, my 55-200 mm lens, a lens hood, lens cleaner, lens cleaning paper, the D5000 instruction manual, two filters, battery charger, battery charger cord, SD card case, and other cables that came with the camera. In fact everything that came with my camera kit (minus the DVDs) easily fits in this bag. And even with all of these items in the bag, there is still room for plenty more (including another lens). My brother bought a Nikon DSLR camera bag, and even though it is slightly cheaper, the 200DG has more space.

2. It is secure and sturdy. It is padded and thick all around, and so sturdy that it looks like it could shield the camera from damage if dropped from a reasonable distance (not that I am going to purposely test this hypothesis any time soon). The straps are strong, and it can be carried either by the handles or using the shoulder strap. Even though the top of the bag is secured by Velcro instead of a zipper, I have been impressed with both the strength and convenience of the Velcro. It stays shut firmly, but easily opens when needed.

3. The price is right. I compared other bags and book-bags for DSLR cameras, and the price of this one was just right for the size. I just don't believe the much more expensive bags offer that much more space and security for the price. Of course, I say this as a non-professional who does not need a larger bag.

The only major drawback I can think of is that the Canon logo is on the bag. I do not say this because I am a Nikon owner (I think both companies make great cameras), but rather, because it makes the bag a target of thieves, since the Canon logo on a bag this size basically says "expensive camera inside." However, this is something I can deal with, especially since I keep the shoulder strap securely next to my body at all times when using the bag. Another minor quibble I have is that there is only one zipper on the compartment on the front of the bag. It seems more intuitive to me to have two zippers there, so they can meet in the middle.

I am using this card with an LG Env Touch phone on the Verizon network. The reason I got this card was because it claims to be a class 6, high speed card. When I transfer music and pictures to the card from my computer though it doesn't seem all that fast. And when I use the card in my phone, it works great for music but the pictures take forever to load. I don't know if this is an issue with the phone or the card itself or a combination of the two, but I was expecting to not have to wait for pictures to load on the screen. That is the primary reason I went with a class 6 card. I just got this the other day and already it seems slow. I would recommend not spending the extra money to get a class 6 card.
